Celebrating Stéphane Grappelli presented by Tim Kliphuis Trio @ Beeston Methodist Church at Chilwell Road
Feb 10 @ 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm

This award-winning Dutch jazz violinist is seen by many as the inheritor of jazz violin legend Stéphane Grappelli’s crown. Here, his trio, now in their 10th year, bring their compelling interplay to Grappelli’s high-energy gypsy swing and jazzed-up classical tunes. This is part of the Village Ventures programme supported by Nottinghamshire County Council.
Classically trained at the Amsterdam Conservatoire, taught to improvise by fiery gypsy jazz legends such as The Rosenberg Trio and Fapy Lafertin, Dutch jazz violinist Tim Kliphuis combines dazzling perfection and complete musical freedom like no-one else in the world. He is the foremost ambassador for the music of Stéphane Grappelli and for the enduringly distinctive gypsy swing style that Grappelli invented with his Hot Club de France partner Django Reinhardt.
In this trio show he reminisces about his inspirational meeting with the French jazz violin maestro and his experiences with the European guitar gypsies, and plays an array of beautiful and uplifting songs from the Parisian left bank, including little-known gems composed by Grappelli himself.
‘The music of Grappelli is alive and well in the hands of Tim Kliphuis and his musicians.’ Nigel Kennedy
‘Dazzling and dynamic finger-busters, joie de vivre and romance.’ Scotland on Sunday
‘Playfully inventive and technically brilliant.’ ★★★★ The Scotsman

‘Pack Up Your Troubles’ – Friday Voices @ Beeston Methodist Church at Chilwell Road
Oct 19 @ 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm
On the evening of Friday 19th October 2018, Friday Voices, a Staffordshire-based mixed voices choir, will be entertaining us in celebration of the Armistice Centenary. They will sing a selection of music to mark the occasion and to raise money for our church charities.  The first half will be a fitting tribute to the cessation of hostilities in World War One, including some specially arranged familiar war-time songs for you to join in a jaunty sing-a-long. The second half will feature a variety of English songs, with something for everyone from madrigals to contemporary. The choir is led by Chris Mallinson, who brings fun and energy to all his work. A highly-regarded, award-winning group, they sing a varied repertoire from sacred to Gershwin to choral takes on modern music. You are all invited to this evening of commemoration and song. Contact the church office on 0115 943 1164 to buy tickets – Adults £6 (£5 in advance) Student/Child £3.  www.fridayvoices.com
