Join Zambian-Scottish singer and songwriter Namvula for an uplifting and joyous session of learning traditional songs from Zambia and other parts of Africa.
The session will include gentle vocal and physical warm-up, and learning 2 or 3 traditional songs, with harmonic parts, by ear.
All levels are welcome, and no previous experience is needed, just a desire to explore the joy of singing!
Creating an intrepid new world where folk and urban traditions of her Zambian homeland blend with her Scottish roots and London’s vibrant eclectic music scene, Namvula crosses boundaries with a refreshing honesty and evocative lyricism, transporting listeners into different worlds whilst staying firmly rooted in African soil.
Namvula is backed by a stellar band of some of the UK’s most respected African and jazz musicians, including Mercury-nominated bassist Liran Donin, Sengalese percussionist Mamadou Sarr and guitarist Jack Ross.
Unfortunately kora maestro Kadialy Kouyate has not been able to return from South Africa in time for the concert.

Kimber’s men are a group of singers and musicians whose shows are full of humour, stories, music and toe-tapping songs, performed with wonderful a capella harmonies or accompaniment on guitars, whistles, bandolin and Border bagpipes.
The group possesses a wide vocal range, with John Bromley being one of the finest bass singers on the British folk scene, Joe Stead, having performed with legendary American singer, Pete Seeger.
Probably the finest and funniest purveyors of sea shanties in Europe, this group never fails to entertain.
This concert is part of Village Ventures, Notts County Council’s Rural and Touring Scheme, co-ordinated by Artservice and financially assisted by Arts Council East Midlands, Notts CC and the seven District Councils.
Undoubtedly one of the most industrious bands on the UK roots circuit, Rob Heron & The Tea Pad Orchestra play their own brand of Western swing, blues, Gypsy jazz and country.
Drawing on an eclectic range of styles and influenced by early 20th century American music, with the addition of razor-sharp solos, irresistible arrangements and expanding repertoire of original material, their music harks back to a golden age whilst staying perfectly modern.
The songs are penned by Rob Heron, a crazy fool for country music and a full-time dandy-cowboy. His songs are full of character, satire and good old fashion hollerin’.
